James Tar Tsaaior, poet, storyteller, biographer, and writer of creative non-fiction, is a Professor of English, Media and Cultural Studies and Senior Associate Research Fellow in the Department of English of the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa. Until recently, he was Alexander von Humboldt Experienced Research Fellow and Visiting Professor in the Centre for Anglophone and American Studies, University of Potsdam, Germany. He has also held visiting professorships to Princeton University and Columbia University, USA, Birmingham State University, UK, Cairo University and Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt and Rhodes University, South Africa. Between 2010 – 2011, he was Isaac Newton and Leverhulme Trust visiting research fellow, Centre of African Studies and scholar-in-residence, Wolfson College, University of Cambridge, UK. He has published three poetry collections: Moments and Monuments (2005), I am Chibok (2016) and Memories of the Ocean (2021), as well as two biographies and a travelogue.
